Born in Malaysia in 1957, he moved to Taiwan in 1977 to study theater and film. Inspired by Bresson and Antonioni, he explores urban isolation, a central theme in his work. His film debut, Rebels of the Neon God (1992), was followed by Vive l’amour (1994, Golden Lion) and The River (1996, Jury Prize in Berlin). Recognized at major festivals, he has won five FIPRESCI Awards. In recent years, he has developed the concept of the “Museum as Cinema,” promoting an alternative, anti-commercial viewing experience.
