A collage of images, sounds, letters, diaries, notes, noises, voices and fragments tells the story of a family torn apart. People who found each other by chance, then lost each other, whose remaining children and grandchildren are now disappearing. It is a tale of speaking and silence, first loves and lost happiness.
Thomas Heise, born in Berlin (GDR) in 1955, began an apprenticeship as a printer after leaving school and assisted director Heiner Carow from 1975 to 1978. At the same time, he graduated from high school and then studied at the Babelsberg Film Academy, but was expelled in 1983 for political reasons. He worked as a freelance author and director and was a master student at the Akademie der Künste zu Berlin from 1987 to 1990. He worked with Fritz Marquardt at the Berliner Ensemble from 1990 to 1997 and also as a director during Heiner Müller's directorship. Since 1997 he worked as a freelance author and director. In 2001, Heise was admitted to the Akademie der Künste zu Berlin und Brandenburg, where he was director of the film and media art section since 2018. From 2007 to 2013 he was a professor at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design, and since 2014 he was Professor of Art and Film at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.
Thomas Heise died on 29 May 2024 in Berlin.
